Guide
9 ways to make your software demos look professional.
Most of what makes a demo look polished happens before and around the recording, not in hours of editing. Here is a checklist you can use for your next product walkthrough or tutorial.
- Clean up before you record. Close notifications, hide personal bookmarks and tabs, use a tidy desktop and realistic sample data instead of “test test”.
- Record one window, not the whole screen. A single app window is easier to frame and keeps other things out of the shot.
- Script the clicks, not the words. Know the path through the app in advance. A short outline is enough; you can talk naturally.
- Move the mouse slowly and on purpose. Pause on the thing you're about to click. Fast, wandering cursors are the most common reason demos are hard to follow.
- Zoom in where it matters. Small buttons and form fields are hard to see in a full-screen video. Zoom on the important clicks and come back out between steps.
- Frame it. A little padding, rounded corners and a calm background make a recording look finished and help it stand out on social media and in docs.
- Use a decent microphone and turn off system sounds. Viewers forgive average video much more than bad audio.
- Add captions. Many people watch without sound, especially on social media and in the office.
- Export at 1080p or higher. Use MP4 (H.264) so the video plays everywhere: websites, Slack, YouTube and phones.
